The Herbert H. Lehman Center for Student Leadership Development aims to provide opportunities intentionally designed to empower responsible, ethical student leadership in order to enrich the community while promoting positive citizenship and the holistic development of students.
The mission is grounded in the firm belief that leadership can be learned and that it is a process, not a position. This is reflected in all of our programs. We strive to provide students with opportunities to develop and enhance a personal philosophy of leadership that includes understanding of self, others and society, and acceptance of responsibilities inherent in community membership.
The programs offered at the Leadership Center are open to all Lehman students. They include:
Experiential Learning Opportunities: Students meet prominent leaders in our nation’s capital as well as key officers at The White House, The Pentagon, and The Supreme Court. These trips are often connected to reading a text and doing a reflection aimed at increasing students’ self-efficacy.
Public Speaking Workshops
Reflective Roundtable Dialogues: Student leaders discuss current issues which are relevant to them. Past discussions have focused on: Stop and Frisk, Occupy Wall Street, and Race and Elections. Open to the entire campus community.
Leadership Lectures and Socials: These events are designed to connect students to faculty, staff, pre-major clubs, alumni, and professionals who are working in students’ fields of interest.
One-Day Workshops: Leadership staff are available to meet with various departments and consult about designing specific workshops for their students’ unique needs. Workshops are framed around Kouzes and Posner’s Five Practices Of Exemplary Leadership
Over the course of the semester, students will be exposed to different leadership styles and models including the Social Change Model; The Relational Leadership Model; and The Five Practices of Exemplary Leaders.
