Athletics: Lehman College is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III (NCAA), the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and the CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC). There are ten women’s and men’s varsity sports—softball / baseball, basketball, indoor track, outdoor track, soccer, cross country, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball.

CUNY on the Concourse:

Lehman College’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies offers many of its programs at a 50,000 sq. ft. educational workforce development center that opened in 2001 on the Grand Concourse in the Bronx.


Notable Academic Programs

  • CUNY Flagship Initiatives in teacher education, new media, and structural and molecular biosciences. Lehman houses Sub programs in the plant sciences of the CUNY doctoral program and has a long-standing collaboration with the New York Botanical Garden.
  • Nationally Recognized Research Programs in Anthropology, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematics & Computer Science, Psychology, and Physics & Astronomy, receive substantial support from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation for faculty research initiatives and to prepare minority students to become future scientists.
  • Lehman Online. Online Education at Lehman College started with one course in Spring 1997. It has grown exponentially at Lehman College. In the Fall 2015 semester nearly 25% of all courses offered at Lehman are delivered fully online, hybrid, partially online or web enhanced, representing a 40% increase from 2014 with almost 24,000 student enrollments in courses. Lehman College continues to offer more asynchronous courses (taught completely online) than any other CUNY senior college. In the Fall of 2015, Lehman is offering over 100 courses completely online giving students the opportunity to learn on their schedule.
  • Global Outreach. The RN Completion Program for Korean Nurses is a partnership with Sungshin University in South Korea to provide Korean nurses with educational and career pathways. Currently in its 6th year, 40-50 students participate annually and over 260 students have completed the program and received their nursing degree from Lehman since the program’s 2008 inception.

Notable Facilities

  • New Facilities: $70 million USGB LEED Platinum Science Hall, phase one of a three-phase science facility, featuring updated, versatile classrooms, teaching and research labs, and instrumentation; a rooftop teaching and research greenhouse; and environmentally sustainable technologies; $6.3 million new Child Care Center.
  • Lehman Speech and Hearing Center: A unique and highly regarded graduate teaching facility, the Speech and Hearing Center at Lehman College provides state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic services to individuals in the NYC Metropolitan area and to members of the Lehman community who have speech, language, hearing, feeding, and swallowing deficits. Services are delivered by graduate student clinicians under the close supervision of clinical educators, who are speech-language pathologists and audiologists certified by ASHA (the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association) and licensed by New York State. The Center also serves as a laboratory for undergraduate and graduate students in Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences and faculty doing applied clinical research in the area of Aphasia treatment, bilingualism, language and literacy, and early childhod intervention.
  • Performing Arts Center: The Lehman Center for Performing Arts mission is to present international cultural attractions at affordable ticket prices. It is a major regional cultural center based in the Bronx. Programming includes international stars, ballet performances, concerts, children programming and much more. The quality, variety and diversity of its annual season are why the Center attracts more than 200,000 visitors from the Bronx, Westchester, New Jersey, and Manhattan annually.
  • The Lehman College Art Gallery, located in a Marcel Breuer-designed space, the gallery brings important contemporary art exhibitions, accompanied by public programming, to audiences in the Bronx and the greater New York area. Each year thousands of visits are made by schoolchildren and their teachers to a range of education programs. The gallery’s innovative technology projects include web sites that promote Bronx public art, architecture, and history.
  • The APEX:This world-class sports and recreation complex hosts major athletic competitions as well as high school and college games and helps to promote community fitness.
  • Lehman Stages: This performance/rehearsal facility includes four different theatre and dance venues.
  • Multimedia Center. This $16 million facility features a state-of-the-art recording and broadcast studio, audio and video control rooms, a newsroom, 8 editing suites, a graphics and animation lab, and a music scoring classroom.

Community Resources and Partnerships (Partial List)

  • The Bronx Small Business Development Center (SBDC) has counseled 10,036 clients with economic impact of $103,982,836, created 2,132 jobs, and saved 886. During the period the SBDC conducted 572 training events with over 13,736 participants.
  • Bronxnet: The station provides hands-on production training and workforce development for students, and equipment access and training for Bronx residents. This award-winning nonprofit community media center serves the public with local programming broadcast over Channels 67-70 on Cablevision and 33-38 on Verizon FIOS in the Bronx.
  • Bronx Institute:The mission of the Bronx Institute is to improve educational outcomes among K-20 students throughout the Bronx. Through innovative, intensive programs such as the ENLACE initiative, the Institute has increased high school graduation, college enrollment, and retention rates. The Bronx Institute nurtures the talents of high-potential youths, with a special focus on college readiness, academic enrichment, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education. To date, the Bronx Institute has worked with more than 13,500 students in over 55 Bronx schools.
  • School Partnerships and Collaborations:Lehman, in collaboration with the New York City Department of Education, has a relationship with several K-12 schools, including the High School of American Studies (HSAS) at Lehman College. For the past six years, HSAS has been recognized with a gold medal by US News & World Report as one of the best 100 high schools in the nation. For the past two years, HSAS was the highest ranked school in all of New York State and last year was ranked No. 11 nationally. The Lehman Center for School College Collaborative and College Now, have also established collaborations with the Bronx cultural institutions including the New York Botanical Gardens, the Wildlife Conservation Society (the Bronx Zoo) and Wave Hill.
