English as a Second Language Program (ESL)
Since 1989, the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Lehman College in the Bronx has offered ESL classes on a full-time or part-time basis to everyone interested in improving their English skills for personal and professional reasons. Classes are affordable, follow a flexible schedule and are taught by dynamic instructors in a student-oriented environment. These ESL courses also provide the students with opportunities to enter degree programs or pursue other training.
Learn and Study English in New York City
|Placement Test (Prior to starting class)|
Lehman College uses the CELSA test (Combined English Language Skills Assessment), a 45-minute computerized grammar test, which assesses and places college and adult ESL students quickly and accurately into beginning to advanced classes. It is approved by the U.S. Department of Education. Spoken and written English are assessed individually by a teacher. See below for locations and hours.
ESL and English as a Second Language Courses in New York for International Students (in F-1 Status ONLY)
Complete the ESL Application form and send it to Brenda Perez, email@example.com at least 4 months before your requested program date. Be sure to include your email address.
There is a $100 dollar (U.S.), non-refundable, application fee that must be submitted with the application. After you receive your acceptance letter, you must contact The International Student & Scholar Office for detailed instructions on how to apply for your I-20 and student visa.
An international student is required by the federal regulations to maintain a full-time course of study, which is 18 hours of instruction (attendance) per week as prescribed in 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(f)(6) and (10). The annual cost for three semesters is $6,834. (A discount is available for early enrollment.)
Intensive English Program (Full-Time)
|This program is open to everyone.|
Learn English for college, graduate school or professional advancement in this academic program. You can take a reading and writing class or a listening and speaking class or you can take both classes. The intensive program is authorized under federal law to enroll non-immigrant students holding the F-1 visa. F-1 visa holders must take both classes.

ESL Afternoon Session (Listening, Speaking, and Pronunciation meets 9 hrs. per week)

Do you want to learn English but feel scared by the language? Don’t be afraid! The language can be simple and fun, and this course will help you learn the basics of speaking and communicating to help you live and work in the US more comfortably. You will learn how to express yourself and complete simple tasks that you’ll need to do on the street and around town. Bilingual teachers will help you to understand what you need to say, and how to say it. Office & Testing Locations and Testing Hours:
All new students must take the placement test (see “Prerequisites” above) and pay a non-refundable $25 testing fee, which will be deducted from your tuition cost when you complete registration. The testing fee can be applied to any course for a period of one year from the date of payment.
No appointment is needed to take the placement test.
